Swedish art pottery bowl from the Rørstrand factory. It is marked on the bottom with the studio mark and the number 8. It has an undulating top rim and a gloss black exterior -- the inside is carved with radiating shafts of yellow, with a rich cobalt glaze over that. The piece is about 1/4 inch thick and 3 1/2 inches tall; the top diameter is around 6 1/4 inches.

RØRSTRAND COVERED BOX - Hertha Bengston

Covered ceramic box designed by the artist Hertha Bengston, who was at the Rørstrand pottery studio from 1941-1964. Round covered box with cobalt glaze has a striking abstract design on the cover, measures 4 inches in diameter across the top x about 2 3/4 inches high. The top is in high gloss glaze over an incised pattern of iregular concentric circles. The deep cobalt glaze on the side is matte, and the bottom is brown, showing the company's R logo, the crowns, the word Sweden and the designer and glazer's marks. Excellent condition.

ARABIA "SPRING" DISH BY LIUKKO-SUNDSTROM

Subtly decorated piece from Arabia Finland -- a matte purplish rounded plate with an inset glazed square that is painted with some of the signs of early Spring -- a flowering bush, possibly Edelweis, against the snow with birch trees behind it. It measures about 4 1/2 inches across. The piece is marked on the back with the word Spring in several languages and the signature of the artist: Helga Liukko-Sundstrom, whose work is frequently drawn from the Finnish contryside. She has been at Arabia since 1962 and in the art department since 1967.

Handpainted piece from Gustavsberg, Sweden, with simple blue glaze over a white porcelain base. The piece has a squarish bottom measuring 3 1/2 inches across and is about 4 inches tall. It is marked with the "G hand " mark and the artist's chop mark. This is the mark of Karin Bjorquist who designed the Indigo series in the early 1950's. Bjorquist's last commission was the Nobel Prize service made 1991.
